I loaned my friend some xbox games and he died. What is the proper way to ask his parents for them back?

How long do you have to wait? I don't want them throwing them out or donating them cause they're probably worth like $250 all together. Do I call? Send a note of condolences and at the end mention the games? Two separate notes?
